What started as a sailing adventure among 3 close friends turned into the beginning of a love story.
We are Dennis and Jannell, brought together by adventure and curiosity. Dennis left The Netherlands in 2022 with close friends Job and Nick. After a year of sailing together, Job and Nick decided to return to land-life which left Dennis who was not interested in doing the same yet cruising the Caribbean with new crew. As fate would have it (with a little help from Tinder), he would cross paths with Jannell, a curious Saint Lucian. In getting to know each other we decided to make our life together a great adventure, starting onboard the Satisfaction. And so as one chapter ended, a new one unfolded.
Our Journey
Our trip starts on the 1st of June 2022. The plan is to throw a farewell party in Grou and to leave the Netherlands through Terschelling.
We will slowly go down towards Portugal to then go to the Canary Islands. There we will stay a few weeks to then sail further to the Cape Verdean Islands.
From those islands, we will cross the Atlantic Ocean towards the Caribbean .
In this region, we will stay a few months and we will see from there how the rest of our trip will go
We are Job Modderman, Nick Zondervan and Dennis Meter. Three good friends who know each other mainly from competitive sailing. At first, we mainly competed against each other in the national competition, but in recent seasons we have been forming a team more and more on larger competitive boats.
We have now racked up quite a few miles together and can rely on each other 100% at all times, something which is of course extremely important when sailing at sea.
Sint Eustatius // Statia // Golden Rock ✨🪨
What a beautiful and welcoming island. There’s an old-time, quintessential, small island charm. Despite the occasional rolling, we loved it. Definitely hoping to visit again.
FYI:
• US dollars are widely accepted
• everyone speaks English despite the island being Dutch
• as small as the island is (3,100 people) there is a diverse expat community
• there is one must-do hike to The Quill (Mount Mazinga). Our crew hiked to it but we’ll manage to on our next visit
Check out our story highlights on Statia for more.

Number of times we’ve done this hike? Dennis: 2, Jannell:1
How many times would we recommend it? Countless!
‼️ it can be challenging if you’re afraid of heights but we both are and were able to manage

With a “one-off” such as our 51-foot home we thought you might like to know some of her pretty cool and unique features.
Some interesting facts that we also frequently answer:
- we have an island in the galley 🏝️
- she was built in 1986 (longer than we both have been alive 😅👶🏼👶🏾)
- she was designed by Doug Peterson
- she was built for racing 🏎️⛵️
- there are no others like her, design-wise. It feels special to own this fantastic sailing beauty which is unique and custom.
What unique or cool features do you have on your boat? Do you prefer one-off, custom or factory built boats? 🤔

We were given so many tips on how to check into Puerto Rico by so many people. Nothing was really clear or straightforward to be honest. However, we decided to go by what authorities in the USVI shared, after all they’re both U.S. territories and should have the same procedures. Well, not exactly.
To spare you much details, this is what we can confirm about checking into Puerto Rico (from our experience).
🔷You simply use the CBP Roam app and wait for someone to respond with next steps. You should have a call with an officer in-app. 🔶Taking too long for approval? Well, you can call the office and they’ll guide you from there.
♦️Don’t be like us and go to the Customs and Border Protection office to clear into the country. You’ll receive a very stern warning, following intense security checks. 😳😳😳 Thankfully, after explaining that we were advised to present ourselves to the office by their counterparts in the Virgin Islands we were allowed to clear in in-office but we have a firm reminder, USE THE APP and WAIT!
The process in the Virgin Islands 🇻🇮 is: immediately go to the office (during operating hours), clear in and be on your way. At the office, you WILL get fingerprinted. All this for non-American citizens. Only Americans can use the app to clear into the Virgin Islands.
It’s a long read but we hope we’ve summarised this as concisely as possible.
⚠️ And of course, you need your B1/B2 visa for entry or a stamped ESTA.

We had a brief holiday in The Netherlands! 🇳🇱
Yes, in March while it’s still cold but we had some nice weather. The most important and amazing part of our trip was spending quality time with loved ones. Until next time… 🤍
